Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Harold Prince and produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Company, Inc., is the most successful stage musical of all time, with worldwide ticket sales exceeding $3.2 billion (far surpassing the highest-grossing film of all time, Titanic, which has grossed $1.9 billion worldwide). The winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the New York production has been seen by 10 million people and grossed over $550 million. Worldwide, Phantom has been seen by over 100 million people.
Based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure (Hugh Panaro) who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine (Sandra Joseph; Julie Hanson plays Christine at certain performances), and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command. Current star Hugh Panaro originally became Broadway's tenth "man behind the mask" in 1999. On April 14, he became the first performer in the history of the New York production to return to the title role.
On January 26, 2004, The Phantom of the Opera celebrated its Sixteenth Anniversary in New York, one of only three shows in Broadway history to reach that milestone. On Wednesday, November 10, 2004 (the 2PM matinee), The Phantom of the Opera played its milestone 7,000th Broadway performance.
The longest-running show currently playing on Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera became the second longest-running show in Broadway history on February 4, 2003 when it played performance #6,681 and surpassed the 6,680 performance run of Les Misérables, putting it behind only Cats.
